Just for Laughs
Therapeutic Laughter:
Jest for the Health of It!

Presentation by Joanne Morcom

Saturday, October 23, 2021
1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom

In the first part of this two-hour interactive workshop, Joanne will discuss the many benefits of therapeutic laughter, ranging from a cardiovascular work-out to stress relief. She will also discuss simple yet effective ways to increase laughter in our daily lives. Questions and comments are welcome. In the second part, Joanne will lead participants through a series of fun exercises designed to encourage true mirthful (therapeutic) laughter. The exercises are interspersed with deep breathing for relaxation. Joanne will describe and demonstrate each exercise before everyone does it together as a group. Laughter is encouraged, not forced, and it’s at no one’s expense. We laugh with each other and not at each other. The session will close on a note with three affirmations and cheers.

About Joanne

Joanne Morcom is a registered social worker and a Certified Laughter Leader and Joyologist with The World Laughter Tour Inc., which was founded by psychologist Steve Wilson in Columbus, Ohio in 1998. The grand vision of The World Laughter Tour is to lead the world to health, happiness and peace through laughter. The motto of the World Laughter Tour is – think globally, laugh locally. Joanne uses her Laughter Leader and Joyology qualifications to facilitate a laughter club program at her workplace, a long-term care centre. She’s also a published poet with five poetry collections to her credit. She writes very short Japanese style poems called haiku, and some of them are amusing. At least, she hopes that they’re amusing! Joanne and her husband Wayne live in Calgary and enjoy travelling. They’ve visited every continent except Antarctica, which is on their bucket list. They also enjoy strolling in their neighbourhood and talking to people they meet. When everybody laughs, it’s the icing on the cake!
